Name: Geoffrey Emile Hooper Nicknames: Geoff, Em, Hoopster, Hey you geek! Birthday: November 23, 1982 Age: 24 Hogwarts House: Gryffindor Bloodline: Half-Blood Spirituality/Religion: Scientology Spiritual Pets: A ferret named Brownie
Hometown: London, England Occupation: Computer Repair Technician → GUI Computer Repair Shop Left/Right/Ambi: Right Sexuality: Computersexual Heterosexual Wand: 10" Redwood with a dragon heartstring core Accent: Take a listen
Personality: Geoffrey is your basic geek. He's not overly intelligent, but he does know just about everything there is to know about computers. If knowing about computers was like a chess game, he'd check your mate up and down the board for as long as it takes. While not an overly confident bloke, he does tend to have a certain gift of gab and an immense imagination, which helps him weasel out of certain situations. It's most likely due to all those video games he played as a child. He won't stray away from a conversation, as he's not entirely anti-social. He just doesn't always know the right thing to say and will attempt to sound 'cool' and end up sounding rather nerdy instead. Or nerdier if you prefer.
Geoff truly means well though. He actually enjoys helping people with their computer issues, because honestly, where would they all be without him? Probably lamenting over their clogged up hard drive issues. And that's just not the place where Geoff wants half of England to be, really. It's a sad, scary place. He figures that not everyone knows as much about computers as he does. He also understands not everyone is crazy enough to learn as much about computers as he has, and he's sort of come to accept his geekiness as a result. His mother is still glad that he's following his dreams even if those dreams don't exactly lie in the wizarding world.
However, Geoff doesn't try to push anyone away. If he does happen to push someone away, it's probably because they just couldn't handle his geek overload, and well, he just can't help that really. He tries to treat everyone fairly, though he can't help it if he's slightly anti-Slytherin for obvious Gryffindor-Slytherin rivalry reasons. And he'd certainly like to see the day when a Slytherin walks into his computer repair shop asking him to fix their computer. Hah! That'll be the day. It's silently his goal in life to snort at a Slytherin in his computer shop.
Geoff is mostly a follower, since he has that general go-with-the-flow type of attitude. Unless something really motivates him to act, he'll pretty much just stand on the sidelines and watch. He was never much into sports, and flying on brooms sort of makes him queasy. He tried out for Keeper for the Gryffindor Quidditch team and kept getting dizzy when the Quaffles were thrown at him. Angelina Johnson said he was a bit of a whiner, but really, he just doesn't know when to shut up.
While he can have all the patience in the world when it comes to computers, he some times loses his patience with people. How can some of them be so stupid? Honestly, he can't figure it out. However, he tries not to fight the system too hard. He's afraid of the day when the system will fight back. He loves everything nerdy from science fiction-fantasy to Sudoku. And even though he's a total geek, there is never a dull moment when around him.
History: Ever wonder what would happen if a Herbology genius and an airline pilot were to combine their genetic information? By YOUR powers combined, I AM.... No, not Captain Planet. But that was close! Geoffrey Hooper had anything but a normal childhood or a normal name for that matter, and Roxanne and Brandon Hooper were anything but normal parents. While Roxie would spend hours outside claiming she could actually hear the plants talking to her, Brandon was off flying large, metallic, bird-like objects, which would both interest and terrify his magical wife. Meanwhile, Geoffrey was safely in his room playing Muggle video games and staying up way past his bedtime taking apart and reassembling every electronic object he could get his six-year-old hands on. At times, his little sisters, Brianna and Aymee, would play along, but what did they know about the subtle science of machinery anyway? Nada! That's what!
It was quite an eventful day when Geoffrey's powers revealed themselves to the world. He and his sisters were visiting with his grandparents, his Muggle grandparents. As it turned out, Geoffrey was so bored that he began to disassemble the remote control, and it was so old that he began to lose parts of it along the way. When it came time to put it all back together, the remote control just did not want to be fixed. And although Geoffrey tried his hardest to make it work, it was as good as dead. Frustrated, Geoffrey clenched his hands into fists, and just then, the television sprang into life, switching over all the channels faster than the blink of an eye. And before Geoffrey could stop it, the television shut off, and he could clearly see a bit of smoke beginning to emerge from the back of it.
This was the exact moment when Geoffrey decided he would never let another Muggle contraption best him ever again. He still remembers the first time he asked his father for a computer. Brandon was watching the news one night, and Geoffrey tapped his shoulder. "Pop, can I have a computer? I want a Macintosh Classic. It has a 9-inch display, 512×342-pixel one-bit video, and 4 MiB memory ceiling, fully equipped with Windows 3.0, and it's only £800!" Brandon slowly turned to his son with a serious expression before bursting out laughing. He explained to Geoffrey that they weren't in any situation to purchase a computer, and when Geoff got a job, then he could buy his own computer.
Well, Geoffrey took that to mean he could get job... that very same day! He started walking around the neighborhood asking people if they needed their grasses mowed or their flowerbeds trimmed. He knew enough about plants from his mother in order to do a fairly decent job for a boy his age. And during the summer, he took to fixing up his neighbors' lawns for a price. At first, he wasn't very good, leaving patches of grass in odd places. This was, of course, because he was doing it without magic. And even though he had shown signs of being magical, he was still much too young to attend a wizarding school, according to Roxie. The time would come when Geoff would finally be asked to attend one of the finest wizarding schools in the land.
And although 'the time' seemed to take forever to Geoff, it was soon knocking at his front door in the form of an owl with a letter. Despite his eagerness to attend a magical school, Geoff never gave up mowing lawns and being the neighborhood gardener of sorts (some times even ditching his homework in order to make a few extra coins on the side). He was actually getting quite good at it and was still storing all this money to buy himself a computer. No! Not just a computer. The computer of his dreams. There had been several upgrades since he had asked his father for one, and he was planning to get the best computer there was.
However, his computer dreams were momentarily placed on the backburner when he started at Hogwarts. Having been Sorted into Gryffindor, Geoff slowly began to make friends and instantly hear about the rumours surrounding The Boy Who Lived. And while Geoff enjoyed knowing he was magical and could perform amazing tasks with the simple wave of his wave, he still longed to be back home, making money to buy his computer. The only thing that set that year apart was that this supposed psycho, Azkaban escapee kept trying to break into Gryffindor Tower, which was totally not cool. However, his first year seemed to go without a hitch otherwise.
As always, during the summer, Geoff would go back to his gardening and such. He figured that now, through magic, he could use easier methods of fixing up people's lawns, but he couldn't use magic outside of school. He was still too young. By the time school came around again, he almost had enough money to buy himself that computer. Second year was a bit insane. His sisters had now entered the school as well, having been sorted into Ravenclaw. It was throughout this year that he learned about Death Eaters because of the incident at the Quidditch World Cup. The Triwizard Tournament was, of course, the most fantastic event ever, and even more so because Gryffindor's star, Harry Potter, had been chosen as a champion.
He soon learned about the murder of Cedric Diggory and was quite put off by it. Even though it didn't technically happen in school, it was still a bit of shock to see something like that in school. As if to put his and his parents' minds at ease, that summer, he took a job at a small toy store nearby, stocking the shelves and doing minor toy repairs. No, this wasn't so he could get access to free toys, but he was well aware that some of the employees who worked in the electronics department knew a thing or two about computers. Sure enough, they advised him to hold off on purchasing a computer, because rumour in the geek world had it that something better was coming along in August of that year.
Luckily, the Hogwarts Express didn't leave until September 1st, which meant Geoff had seven whole days to fiddle around with his new computer now fully equipped with Windows 95. He was in heaven. Then, things started to turn for the worst with rumours of the Dark Lord's return. It was as if Geoff's two worlds had some how collided, and his Muggle father was no longer even safe any more in the skies. Longing to be in front of his computer, Geoff would find himself dosing off during classes. It was his third year, and he had decided to take on Arthimancy, which he absolutely loved. He was always exceptionally good with numbers in school, and this class only served to enhance this ability to work so well with numbers.
For the next four years, he would struggle a bit, having to deal with the war going on in the Wizarding World. After Dumbledore's death at the end of his fourth year, he was almost certain that all hope would be lost. And his fifth year saw him doing not all that great on his OWLs. It didn't help that Death Eaters were pretty much roaming about all over Hogwarts. However, he only managed a few NEWT courses, among them: Potions, Transfiguration, Care of Magical Creatures and Arithmancy obviously. And while Geoff knew he would never get a decent job with only those courses, he still stuck out his magical education, actually doing rather well on his NEWT examinations since he only had those classes to worry about.
After Hogwarts, Geoff found himself a job at a computer repair shop called GUI. Using some of his connections at the toy store and with his immense knowledge of computers (which only increased with the years), Geoff was able to impress the bosses enough to allow him to work both behind the counter and in the back fixing computers. He's currently one of the two employees of the computer repair shop that can actually fix both software and hardware issues. Everyone else specializes in either one or the other. He tries not to use magic on the computers he fixes, but some times when the Muggles aren't watching, it just... sort of slips out? Peter, one of the blokes who works at GUI, is Geoff's flatmate, though he's a bit unstable, since he claims he's starting a band and moving to Australia.
His current drug of choice? The iMac G3, colour: Graphite. Geoff named it The Scientist.
